Patient Rights and Responsibilities

Every patient possesses dignity and worth as a human being and, in order to lead a healthy life, holds the following rights together with the corresponding responsibilities and duties.

Rights of the Patient

  • ① Patients have the right to be respected as individuals, on the basis of their dignity and worth as human beings.
  • ② Patients have the right to receive equal medical services without being discriminated against for any reason, including nationality, gender, age, religion, economic or social status, or type of illness.
  • ③ Patients have the right to choose their attending physician and medical institution in order to receive the best possible care.
  • ④ Patients have the right to receive medical treatment from duly qualified medical professionals.
  • ⑤ Patients and their guardians have the right to request information and records relating to the patient’s medical records.
  • ⑥ Patients and their guardians have the right to receive an explanation of the patient’s condition and of the purpose, methods, content and outcome of treatment, and to choose a treatment method or to refuse treatment.
  • ⑦ Patients and their guardians have the right to receive an explanation of the contents of any document relating to medical treatment before signing it.
  • ⑧ Patients and their guardians have the right to be informed of the details of the medical expenses incurred.
  • ⑨ Patients have the right not to have any confidential information relating to their illness and treatment, or their privacy, infringed.
  • ⑩ Patients and their guardians have the right to express their opinions and to receive a response where they have a complaint about medical services within the clinic or any other matter.

Responsibilities of the Patient

  • ① Patients are responsible for providing medical staff, either directly or through a legal representative, with matters relevant to their care, such as current symptoms, past medical history, medication and other records.
  • ② Patients are responsible for asking for clarification when there is anything they do not understand about their own treatment.
  • ③ Patients are responsible for participating in the treatment plan recommended by medical staff and for cooperating with their care.
  • ④ Patients are responsible for the consequences that arise from not following the treatment plan.
  • ⑤ Patients are responsible for respecting other patients and medical staff, and for taking good care of the clinic’s property.
  • ⑥ Patients are responsible for fulfilling the financial obligations related to their treatment.
  • ⑦ Patients are responsible for complying with the clinic’s rules and regulations.
